What is An Endometrial Ablation?

What is an Endometrial Ablation Procedure?

An endometrial ablation is a quick, minimally invasive in-office procedure for the treatment of heavy or excessive bleeding. An endometrial ablation uses heat to treat the inside lining of the uterus to decrease bleeding and it should only be done on women who are finished having children. Your provider will discuss all of the potential risks, benefits and alternatives to this procedure during your office visit. The Women’s Health group now offers three types of endometrial ablations that include the NovaSure, Genesy Hydro ThermAblator (HTA) and the Minerva.

What are the benefits of in-office ablation procedures?

  • Many patients appreciate the convenience and flexibility of being treated in an office setting rather than the hospital setting.
  • Patients undergoing an in office procedure under local anesthesia usually require less time to recover and less time off of work than more invasive procedures under general anesthesia.
  • Patients often experience less post-operative pain after an in office procedure and often require less postoperative medication
  • After the ablation, you will spend less time and money on buying sanitary products such as pads and tampons and over the counter pain medications.
  • After the ablation you will have more energy to do the things you enjoy again!

Am I postmenopausal?

Postmenopausal is considered going at least 1 year with no periods.

Can I still become pregnant after an endometrial ablation?

Although it is still possible to get pregnant after an ablation, it is very dangerous for both the mother and the fetus because the uterine lining would no longer be able to safely support fetal development. It is very important to talk to your doctor about what birth control you will use after the endometrial ablation prior to the procedure.

The Women’s Health group now offers three types of endometrial ablations that include the following:
