Implanon® lasts 3 years and is highly effective in preventing pregnancy (99%). Implanon® is a progesterone only form of birth control which is ideal for women who cannot tolerate estrogen or have a medical condition in which estrogen is not safe. Deciding on Implanon®: Implanon® is the right method for you if you are unable or do not tolerate estrogen containing products, are breastfeeding, or have a medical condition which makes pregnancy or estrogen use unsafe. It is also a great alternative for women who cannot remember to take a pill every day. Since Implanon® is reversible, it is a good choice for women who desire long term birth control but may still want children in the future. Implanon® works by preventing ovulation and thickening cervical mucus, thus preventing sperm from reaching an egg. Insertion: Implanon® is inserted and removed in your healthcare provider’s office. It is a quick procedure which involves a mild anesthetic to minimize any discomfort. Mild bruising and swelling may occur after insertion. If you are not using another form of birth control, it is recommended to have the Implanon® placed on days 1-5 of cycle or use a backup method for 7 days after insertion. If you are on birth control pills, the patch, or Nuvaring®, the best time for insertion is during the hormone-free week. Side Effects: It is important to note that irregular bleeding or spotting is a common side effect of the Implanon®. In studies, 1 out of 10 women had the Implanon® removed because of bleeding problems. Mood swings, weight gain, headaches, acne, and depression are less common side effects but may occur with Implanon® use.
